Bald Eagle - Haliaeetus leucocephalus

Range: North America, Canada and Alaska.
Conservation Status: Numbers are still lower than post 1900's although there has been a marked increase in numbers over recent years and Americas "Eagle protection Act" created specifically to protect the Bald Eagle has been abolished, although the birds are still highly protected by other laws.
Habitat: Wetlands, Lakes, Rivers and Coastal Areas.
Diet: Mainly fish but also carrion and waterfowl. Birds up to the size of Geese are sometimes taken as are mammals to the size of a Hare.
Other Information: Bald Eagles obtain their white head and white tail at the age of around 5 years old. They are not Bald and do have feathered heads. The term is derived from the Old English word "Balde" which means white. They were previously known as the "Balde Headed Eagle" literally meaning White Headed Eagle. These eagles also build the largest known nest of any bird - one nest weighed-in at approximately 2 tons!
